HYPERAMINO by Gaspari Nutrition

If you made it through basic biology in school, it should come as no surprise that amino acids are the building blocks of muscle. Branched chain amino acids, or BCAAs, encompass the three amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which are important for protein synthesis (read: building muscle) and reducing fatigue during workouts. But if you are consuming your proper macros every day and drinking your protein powder during the anabolic window post workout, why should you bother taking a BCAA supplement at all?
Well for starters, consuming BCAAs upon waking or during a fasted cardio session can help prevent muscle breakdown and fatigue. Leucine is a vital player in protein synthesis and isoleucine promotes glucose uptake by the cells (1). This means taking these upon waking can slow down muscle breakdown that occurs with the lack of food intake during the night, and when consumed during fasted workouts can prevent further breakdown in addition to limiting serotonin production in the brain caused by a tryptophan rush which increases fatigue. Not to mention the third amino acid in the complex, valine, has a stimulant effect on the central nervous system and can be used as a fuel source for your muscles (2). Valine is also one of the most important amino acids for building physical strength and muscle mass.
BCAAs are incredibly important if used at the proper times, like most other supplements, and shouldn’t be overlooked as something to only get from food. When used during a workout, they help regulate blood sugar and increase endurance, and even prevent muscle breakdown depending on workout timing by protecting lean muscle from being used for fuel. But perhaps the most important time to use BCAAs is during a fat loss period, such as pre-contest or during a cutting phase(3). BCAAs have been shown to increase fat burning while preserving current muscle tissue, and during these periods we tend to consume less food overall which means we aren’t always providing enough resources to every system possible.
Bottom line? Don’t throw away all your hard work by failing to give your muscles what they need to survive. Do your fasted cardio, eat clean, lift heavy, and drink your BCAAs.
